The off-season
Lincoln's pollen count in winter: when Nebraska Wesleyan's count stops, when it starts again, and what to do with the bedroom in between
- Feb to mid-Oct NWU's counting season, five days a week
- Late October End of Nebraska's hay fever season, State Museum, 2001
- 0 Public daily pollen counts for Lincoln we've found outside NWU's season
Nebraska Wesleyan University counts Lincoln's pollen five days a week from February through mid-October, and the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department doesn't run its own count. So from mid-October to February there's no daily public number to check. A 2001 State Museum note placed the end of Nebraska's hay fever season in late October. Winter is when the house is shut and the bed gets the most use, which makes it a natural time to book a mattress cleaning.
Lincoln's pollen year at a glance
| Period | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| February | NWU's count begins for the season | NWU |
| February to mid-October | Counts five days a week | NWU |
| Mid-October | NWU's count ends for the season | NWU |
| Late October | End of Nebraska's hay fever season | Bolick, State Museum, 2001 |
| November to January | No daily public count we've found | NWU; LLCHD |
Why the count stops
NWU's counting season follows the plants. Bolick's 2001 State Museum note says the museum's Division of Botany counted pollen five days a week from late February to mid-October, and NWU's count keeps the same rhythm today. LLCHD's air quality page says the department doesn't conduct seasonal pollen counts and links to NWU instead.
Why winter is the time to refresh the bed
When the count stops, the house closes up. Windows stay shut, the furnace runs, and everyone spends more hours in bed. That's the best moment to start fresh: a full HEPA vacuum, dry vapor steam across the top panel, borders, seams and tufts, and a second HEPA pass to lift what the heat loosened. Low moisture, nothing soaked.
