Bed Mites in Lincoln Mattresses: What Actually Helps
Written by Matthew Brunken · Sleep Sanitation
Bed mites (house dust mites) are a fact of indoor life, not a sign of a dirty house. Our dry vapor steam uses heat to kill them; in published tests, a 96°C steam cleaner killed all of the mites in treated carpet and mattress samples (Glass and Needham, 2004). The rest of this guide covers what that does and does not mean.
What bed mites actually are
They are microscopic animals that feed on shed skin flakes. They need warmth and humidity, and a mattress provides both: warmed by a sleeper for eight hours a night, humidified by the same person, and rarely cleaned because the problem is invisible.
Why winter in Lincoln matters
From October through April, a Lincoln bedroom is a closed room with the heat running and the windows shut. Warmth, humidity from the sleeper and a food source, for months at a time, is the environment bed mites do well in.
What actually helps
Heat. Steam heat killed bed mites in published tests: Glass and Needham (2004) reported 100 percent mortality of D. farinae in carpet and mattress samples treated with a 96°C steam cleaner, and Colloff (1995) found no live mites in steam-treated, mite-seeded carpet squares over four months. Those were study conditions with those machines, not a measurement in your bedroom. Sleep Sanitation's Knowledge Center covers both studies in detail in Does steam kill dust mites in mattresses?
HEPA vacuuming. Dead mites and droppings stay in the fabric until something lifts them, which is why every visit includes it.
Lower humidity. A drier bedroom is less hospitable to bed mites. Our bedroom CO₂ testing is a separate service for households who want to know how well a closed bedroom ventilates overnight.
Encasements, fitted afterwards. Fit an encasement *after* treatment, not before, so you are not sealing the debris inside it.
Washing bedding hot. Sheets, pillowcases and washable covers on a hot cycle in your own machine.
How long does it last?
It depends on your room, not on our visit. Bed mites return from the carpet, upholstery and bedding around the mattress, at a rate set by humidity, pets, bedding habits and whether an encasement is used. Anyone promising a permanent result is selling something they cannot deliver.
What we will not claim
We do not treat allergies or asthma, and we make no medical claim for this service. This is general information, not medical advice; if you have symptoms, talk to your doctor.
