Mattress Cleaning for UNL Student Apartments
Written by Matthew Brunken · Sleep Sanitation
In a furnished off-campus Lincoln apartment, the mattress can be the oldest thing in the unit, with years of earlier occupants' nights in it.
What is the problem with a furnished mattress?
A furnished apartment's mattress arrives with a history nobody documented: previous occupants, previous pets, previous accidents. Parents furnishing a student apartment generally discover this at move-in, and the choice looks like $249 or a few hundred more for a new mattress plus disposal logistics plus an off-gassing period.
Sanitizing the mattress is the answer in many cases — and it is the answer for a reason beyond cost. The accumulation that matters (skin cells, dander, bed mites (house dust mites), odor compounds) is exactly what a heat-based low-moisture process addresses. A brand new mattress is nice, but a sanitized one addresses the actual problem in a single visit.
What do we do for student apartments?
For a student apartment, the visit is built around move-in:
- Multi-mattress pricing — $249 first mattress, $149–$199 each additional in the same visit, so an apartment with several beds costs less than separate appointments.
- Per-mattress documentation on our inspection form: material, special care notes, and urine or odor observations.
- Ordinary urine accidents included, and underside/full-surface treatment available where the history requires it, priced openly at +$50–$75 per mattress.
For a parent setting up one apartment, it is a single visit.
When should you book?
The best window is before your student's furniture arrives: the mattress is accessible and there is nothing to work around. If the move-in dates are tight, call with them and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it.
For parents, doing it at move-in weekend is normal. We can work around boxes, and we do not need much space.
What we will tell you about mattresses that should not be treated
Some mattresses should be replaced rather than treated, and we will say so:
- A core that has been saturated repeatedly for years.
- Structural failure — collapsed edges, torn covers, springs through the surface.
- An active bed bug infestation, which is a pest-control problem and not a cleaning one. We will refer you rather than book you.
We flag those per mattress instead of treating everything and sending one invoice.
What should parents know?
- Book it before the first night, not after midterms.
- Ask about the underside if the mattress has history — it is +$50–$75 and it is where wicking ends up.
- Mention any pet or urine history at booking, because that determines the treatment applied.
- Buy a waterproof protector. It is the cheapest insurance available.
