August move-in: a mattress plan for students and parents

Check the bed before the first night, and book any cleaning for the days before your furniture arrives. UNL's Move-In 2026 ran August 16 to 19 and classes started August 24, so the week before move-in is the window for an appointment. The bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch.

  1. July 22, 2026

    UNL emailed residence hall students their move-in date and time. Off-campus move-in dates vary by building. (UNL Housing)

When is the best time to clean a mattress before move-in?

  1. Before you carry anything in, look at the bed in good light. Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County lists the signs of bed bugs as live bugs, dead bugs, shed exoskeletons and black fecal marks, and says to check fabric seams, folds and zippers first.
  2. If you find bugs, get them identified. Extension reports that about half of the suspected bed bugs brought to Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County turn out to be bat bugs, which are handled differently.
  3. Book cleaning for the empty room, before your furniture arrives, so the mattress has the room to itself.
  4. Check your care label and warranty terms before you book any cleaning.
  5. Make the bed only when it is dry to the touch. The moisture check before we leave tells you where it stands.

How does UNL move-in week affect scheduling?

UNL ran Move-In 2026 check-in through Memorial Stadium, and residence hall moves filled August 16 to 19. If you are moving into an apartment near City Campus that week, plan around campus traffic, or schedule your own move and any cleaning for the days before.

What we don't know

  • Your building's move-in date. Off-campus move-in dates are not set by UNL.
  • 2027 dates beyond the projection. UNL lists fall 2027 move-in as projected and subject to change.

Questions from students and parents

When should we book a mattress cleaning around move-in?

For the days before your furniture arrives, while the room is empty. In 2026 that meant the week before UNL's August 16 to 19 move-in.

Can you clean the bed the same week we move in?

Yes, if we have an opening. The bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch, and the moisture check tells us when it is ready, so leave room before the first night.

What if I find bugs?

Stop, and don't sleep on it. Get the bug identified by Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County first. Cleaning comes after pest treatment, not instead of it.
