The Lincoln academic year
Dorm mattress vs apartment mattress: when to sanitize in Lincoln
A Lincoln dorm mattress (UNL, Nebraska Wesleyan or Union Adventist) belongs to the school, so we do not sanitize it. An off-campus apartment mattress, a Greek house bed or a used mattress you bring in is different: sanitize before the first night, or at semester turnover, for $249 on the first mattress, any size.
When this matters
Before the first night off campus
Best window for a furnished or used apartment mattress. (Lincoln Mattress Cleaning)
December or May break
Common reset for Greek houses and apartments that stay occupied across semesters. (Lincoln Mattress Cleaning)
After a urine accident or musty odor
Book when the room is free; ordinary urine accidents are included in the base price. (Lincoln Mattress Cleaning)
What is different about a dorm mattress?
Ownership and access. UNL, NWU and Union Adventist provide the hall mattress. Students do not book a professional cleaning on it. Pack bedding that fits the published size (UNL and most NWU first-year halls are extra-long twin; UAU Rees Hall lists 36 by 72).
What is different about an apartment mattress?
You (or the person who furnished the unit) control it. That is when dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming and UV-C light treatment help: bed mites (house dust mites), ordinary urine accidents and odor. Every visit includes two checks, and the bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch.
When is sanitizing worth it off campus?
- Before the first night on a used or handed-down bed.
- At August move-in while the room is empty.
- Between semesters if the same bed is staying.
- After a pet or spill you can still smell.
When the core is saturated or the cover is torn through, replacement is the honest answer. Sleep Sanitation's decision guide covers that call.
What we don't know
- Whether a specific furnished apartment will replace its beds this year. Ask before you spend.
- Hall policies that change by school year. Confirm sizes on each school's housing page.
Questions from students and parents
When should a dorm mattress be sanitized?
It shouldn't be, by us. Hall beds stay with University Housing, NWU Residential Education or Union Adventist residence life. Students can still use a pad, washable bedding and an encasement.
When should an apartment mattress be sanitized?
Before the first night on a used or furnished bed, after a urine accident, when odor returns, or between semesters if the bed is staying. See [UNL student apartments](/guides/unl-student-apartment-mattress-cleaning).
Where do I read how the method works?
Sleep Sanitation's Knowledge Center covers dry vapor steam, moisture and bed mites. Start with the [cleaning methods hub](https://sleepsanitation.com/knowledge-center/mattress-cleaning-methods).
