The Lincoln academic year
A parent's mattress checklist for the UNL year
If your student lives in a UNL residence hall, the mattress is the university's and your list is short: a pad, washable bedding and a check at move-out. If they live off campus, the mattress is the big item, and the dates to plan around are their move-in day, UNL's mid-August move-in week and the May move-out.
When this matters
January 13, 2027
Housing application opens for incoming first-year students in MyRED. (UNL Admissions)
April 1, 2027
Priority housing deadline; room assignments are sent May 19 to students who meet it. (UNL Admissions)
July 21, 2027
Move-in date and time notices for residence halls. (UNL Admissions)
August 15 to 18, 2027
Projected move-in. Classes start August 23. (UNL Admissions)
Early May
Move-out week. In 2026, halls closed at 1 PM on Saturday, May 9. (UNL Move Out)
What does a residence hall student need?
- Spring: nothing to buy yet. The housing application opens in January and room assignments follow in May.
- Summer: check whether the bed will be lofted. UNL lofts beds in traditional halls and two-bedroom suites, which affects how thick a topper can sensibly be.
- Move-in: pack a mattress pad or encasement and washable bedding. Nebraska Extension suggests light-colored sheets or encasements because they make bed bugs easier to spot.
- Breaks: UNL halls stay open over fall, Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks. If your student travels, Extension's advice for returning home is to unpack outside or in the garage and run clothes in the dryer on high heat for 20 to 30 minutes.
- May: the move-out checklist says to check the mattress's condition and submit a Fix-It for any damage, and to leave the original mattress pad bed cover.
What about an off-campus apartment?
- When you pick the apartment, ask whether it comes furnished and how old the bed is, so you know whether to bring one.
- On move-in day, check the bed before the first night. See our August move-in plan.
- If you buy a used bed, follow the used mattress inspection first.
- Book cleaning before your student's furniture arrives, while the apartment is empty.
- In May, decide early whether the bed is staying, moving or going. May move-out lists Lincoln's drop-off for residents.

What we don't know
- Your student's building schedule. Off-campus move-in and move-out dates are not set by UNL.
- Spring 2027 move-out times. UNL publishes them closer to May.
Questions from students and parents
Do residence hall beds need anything from home?
UNL provides the mattress. Its move-in page says beds are lofted in traditional halls and two-bedroom suites and unlofted in apartments and four-bedroom suites, which is worth knowing before you buy a topper or sheets.
Can you clean a mattress in a UNL residence hall?
No. Residence hall mattresses are University Housing property; damage goes through UNL's Fix-It process. We clean mattresses in off-campus apartments and houses.
When should we book a cleaning for an off-campus apartment?
Before your student's furniture arrives, while the room is empty. Book ahead of move-in day: the bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch, and the moisture check before we leave tells you where it stands.
